History

Since 1924, The Collegiate has been a beloved attraction in Alfred. Originally operated by the legendary John E. Ninos beginning in 1950 and later carried on by his son John W. Ninos and wife Chelly through June 2025, this storied establishment welcomed generations of visitors with warmth, flavor, and community spirit.

Today, Alfred State College is proud to continue that tradition. Under the college’s stewardship, The Collegiate remains a cornerstone of Alfred’s Main Street, home to colorful conversations, impromptu reunions, and the unmistakable energy that defines “The Jet.” It remains the heart of downtown and the embodiment of the Village of Alfred spirit.

Hands-on learning is served daily at the Collegiate, where Alfred State students gain real-world experience in Culinary Arts, Business, Marketing, and beyond. Students create many of the menu’s desserts, and visitors are welcome to taste their creativity.
